How to tell real research material from a nice label

Identity, purity, and independent testing are what separate genuine material from a printed claim. Most buyers never learn to read the documentation. Here's what each term means and how to evaluate it.

Identity vs. purity — two different questions

Purity asks 'how much of the vial is the intended compound and how little is contaminant.' Identity asks 'is it actually the compound on the label at all.' A vial can be 99% pure and still be the wrong molecule. Serious testing answers both — typically purity by HPLC and identity by mass spectrometry — and a document that only shows one is answering half the question.

Reading a Certificate of Analysis

A meaningful COA ties to a specific batch or lot, names the testing lab, states the method, and reports an actual number — not a generic 'high purity' stamp. Cross-checking the batch on the testing lab's own system, rather than trusting a forwarded PDF, is the difference between verification and faith, because a PDF can be edited in a minute.

Third-party, and why 'in-house' isn't enough

A result is only as independent as the lab that produced it. Third-party testing — by an accredited lab with no stake in the outcome — carries weight that a seller's own claim does not. Accreditation (such as ISO/IEC 17025) means an outside body audits the lab's methods and competence on a schedule. None of this guarantees anything about a specific purchase, but it's the documentation a careful evaluator looks for before anything else.

Common questions

What is a COA?

A Certificate of Analysis is a document reporting the test results for a specific batch of material — typically identity, purity, and sometimes content and contaminant testing. It is only meaningful if it is tied to the exact lot you have and, ideally, produced by an independent lab.

What does 'third-party tested' mean?

It means an independent laboratory — not the seller — performed the analysis. Independent testing removes the conflict of interest in a seller grading their own product, which is why it is the strongest quality signal.

What purity number is good?

For research peptides, HPLC purity figures of roughly 98% or higher are commonly cited as a quality benchmark — but a number is only credible when the method (HPLC) and the actual chromatogram are shown, and the identity is confirmed separately by mass spec.

Why does identity testing matter?

Purity tells you how much of the sample is one main substance; identity (by mass spectrometry) confirms that substance is actually the peptide claimed. High purity of the wrong molecule is still the wrong molecule.
